The Somali Agriculture Technical Group (SATG) is actively involved in enhancing the agricultural sector in Somalia by promoting access to high-quality sowing seeds. To achieve this goal, SATG has fostered collaborative partnerships with various stakeholders engaged in improving agricultural production systems and specifically the seed sector. These partners include farmers, agricultural experts, local and international organizations, as well as governmental bodies at both the federal and state levels that focus on enhancing food production systems in Somalia.

Implementing Programs

SATG has implemented several programs aimed at facilitating viable agricultural production systems, with a particular emphasis on producing quality and certified seeds for staple crops like Maize, Sorghum, and beans. These programs are being executed in different regions known for their agricultural productivity, such as Hiran, Middle Shabelle, Lower Shabelle, Bay, and Lower Juba regions.

One of the key initiatives involves working closely with Somali farmer cooperatives to produce high-quality and certified seeds. SATG provides technical support to these cooperatives, including training sessions on proper seed production practices. This training covers essential aspects such as implementing effective pest control measures, employing appropriate harvesting and post-harvest technologies, and ensuring seed quality control measures are followed. Furthermore, SATG’s field extension workers provide daily guidance to assist the cooperatives in producing and selling premium sowing seeds for Maize and Sorghum crops.

The ultimate objective of these programs is to empower vulnerable rural communities to enhance their agricultural production levels, thereby improving food security and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. By promoting the availability of quality and certified sowing seeds, SATG aims to enhance the overall agricultural productivity in Somalia, contributing to the well-being of the farming communities and the country’s food security goals.
